Sustainable Fashion with Organic Basics

Since a long time, fashion is not only meant to serve a purpose but also to make us feel comfortable and look good.

But where does my new top come from and what impact has my jeans on the planet?

Besides the aim of purchasing the best style for little money, we should not forget the ethical and environmental responsibilities of our consumption.

“The fashion industry is a dirty bastard”  – Organic Basics

Firstly, choosing sustainable fashion instead of conventional fashion is said to be more expensive. Secondly, it’s hard to differentiate between all those companies promising “ethical and environmentally friendly production”.

Unfortunately, many fashion companies are not transparent with their practices, and some “greenwash” information or downright mislead in an attempt to profit by the growing eco-conscious trends. In return, this makes it even harder for the consumer find the “good players”.

A Beginner’s Guide To Sustainable Fashion

Conventional fashion industry

  • the fashion industry is the second-largest consumer of water
  • It is responsible for 20% of the world’s water pollution
  • the industry’s CO² emissions are projected to increase by more than 60% by 2030 to nearly 2.8 billion tons per year – the equivalent of emissions produced by nearly 230 million passenger vehicles driven for a year, assuming average driving patterns.” Pulse of the Fashion Industry 2017
  • the production of fashion causes 92 million tons of waste every year (Pulse of the Fashion Industry 2017)

The enormous environmental impact aspect of reusing, recycling and sustainable production become more and more important.

Organic Basics

Organic Basics is a upcoming fashion brand with a focus on sustainable production. Organic and recycled fabrics, sustainable production, and fair working policies are playing the main role in the production of its sustainable fashion.

Sustainable thinking is the core mission of Organic Basics. They exclusively choose environmentally friendly fabrics and partner with factories with a relatively low environmental impact.

Sustainable production

One of the most important parts of sustainable production is: design everything to last. It doesn’t matter how eco-friendly a product has been produced – the most environmentally friendly item is the one you didn’t buy! That means investing in lasting fabrics and high-quality workmanship.

Organic Basics combines this method with simplicity, functional design, and convenience.

The Factories

Organic Basics only works with trusted, certified factory partners. These partners share the same sustainable vision and continuously strive to reduce their environmental footprint. The workplaces are free of child labor and forced labor, and the factories ensure a safe working space, a living wage, and employee perks like free lunch and childcare. The factories are settled in Italy, Turkey, Portugal and Austria.

The materials and technology

Handpicked fabrics, based on their environmental footprint and lifetime durability guarantee a long life period for each product. OB only uses Class A and B fibers and always looks for the most responsible fabric material and technology available.

Requirements for textiles at Organic Basics

  • natural
  • renewable
  • recycled
  • biodegradable
  • low-impact

The Fabrics

The sustainable fashion brand prioritizes high quality clothes which last for many years. Therefore all used fabrics are handpicked based on its environmental footprint and its lifetime durability. That means natural, renewable, recycled, biodegradable and or low-impact textiles only.

Organic Cotton with Gots Standard

Organic Basics uses Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS, Licence number: USB TEX 2015) certified organic cotton.

The Organic Cotton is:

  • hand-picked
  • chemical-free
  • grown at the coast of the Aegean Sea
  • super soft
  • one of the most durable cottons in the world

The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) also guarantees fair working conditions and living wages for the workers.

Recycled Nylon with GRS Certificate

The premium Italian recycled nylon is Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certified.
The GRS is an international, voluntary full product standard that sets the following requirements:

  • third-party certification of recycled content
  • chain of custody
  • social and environmental practices
  • chemical restrictions.

The GRS is said to be even stronger and more durable than the highest standard conventional nylon and it takes 80% less water to make and creates 90% fewer CO2 emissions in comparison to the virgin fabric. It’s made from pre-consumer textile waste that would otherwise go to the landfill, or worse.

Characteristics of the recycled nylon:

  • breathable
  • lightweight
  • moisture-wicking.

Tencel Lyocell from sustainably sourced wood

Made from Eucalyptus trees, which grow fast and thick central European forests, using 80% less water in comparison to cotton plants – TENCEL™ Lyocell is sourced environmentally responsible from natural raw material wood.

Super soft Tencel Lyocell made from Eucalyptus trees

The trees are thinned out before the wood is turned into a pulp. Dissolved in a closed-loop process with a non-toxic organic solvent the wood is processed to a magical biodegradable fiber that is supposed to feel softer and lighter than cotton.

Recycled wool

Recycled wool

Virgin wool has an immense environmental impact because of the required land for the sheep and high water and chemical usage during production and dyeing. Organic Basics cuts out the dyeing process, saving water and chemicals and eliminating wastewater entirely for their recycled wool.

Natural Silver thread against odor

SilverTech Everyday collection Tee and Brief

Natural silver threads are used for the “SilverTech™ Everyday” collection for men and women and the SilverTech Active collection. This is supposed to make the clothing soft, odor-controlling and heat-regulating.
The technique covers the polymer fiber in natural silver and then blend it with organic cotton.

Silver can be toxic if ingested in high quantities and nano-silvers can be washed off. The natural silver used for the products of Organic Basics is safe for washing and harmless for your health.

Polygiene®

Polygiene® is a safe, bluesign® approved permanent fabric treatment made from recycled silver salt. By inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria it keeps the fabric fresher for longer between washes.  This allows you to wear it longer and wash less – saving time, energy and water. It is used for the SilverTech™ Active collection. Polygiene® does not contain any nano silvers.

Seamless knitting

Seamless knitting provides better stretch and comfort and also reduces fabric waste during the production phase. It’s perfect for Yoga and Pilates!

Impact Index

The Impact Index gives you the opportunity to get a calculation of the life cycle footprint of a single product. The assessment is based on the entire supply chain – from raw material production to textile manufacturing through to the consumer phase.
