10 Things to know before you go to a Christmas market in Munich 

  • usually, Christmas markets are called “Weihnachstsmarkt” or “Christkindlmarkt” in Germany
  • opening times are mostly between 10-11 am and closing times are around 8-9 pm, sometimes 10 pm
  • generally, the Christmas markets close to Christmas Eve, but some stay open until New Year’s Eve
  • the major markets are usually in the center of the town or near the city hall or church
  • daytime during the weeks is the least crowded time to visit a Christmas market in Munich 
  • Cash is needed! Credit Cards are rarely accepted! (usually, you should find an ATM around somewhere)
  • Munich and Bavaria have some of the most magical Christmas markets in the world
  • most Christmas markets in Munich and Bavaria open late November or on the weekend of the first Advent
  • there are Christmas markets in every major city and plenty more in smaller villages and off-the-beaten-path in Bavaria

Located at the main square of the old town of Munich, the Marienplatz Christmas Market (or simply “Munich Christmas Market”) is one of the most popular Christmas markets in Bavaria. The good thing about it: no extra planning is needed, as the Marienplatz is hard to miss on a typical sightseeing-tour through Munich.

Our personal tip:
Especially in December, after the sunset, we recommend the St Peter’s Church for an insanely beautiful view! Not only on the Marienplatz Christmas Market but also the enlightened city Munich.

2. Winter TollWood Munich

Dates in 2019:

How to get to Winter Tollwood 2019:
We recommend coming by public transport, most popular is U4/U5 Theresienwiese or U3/U6 Goetheplatz

Tickets purchased for an event on the Winter Tollwood can be used as a public transport ticket (MVV) three-hours before the respective event as well as three hours after.

The Winter Tollwood is an alternative Christmas market raising awareness for the environment. “The Market of Ideas” includes organic fare and crafts like clothing, accessories, artwork, and other things. While strolling around and searching for unique Christmas gifts, you might choose between different cuisines from India over African to traditional German cuisine. Of course, Winter Tollwood also offers great mulled wine outside the tents.

3. Munich “Feuerzangenbowle” by the Isartor Gate

This winter, the Munich Feuerzangenbowle at the Isartor will once again be a “hot topic”. The drink, which is a fragrant blend of red wine, rum, and spices, is served from a gigantic cauldron with an amazing top.

5. Christmas Village in the Kaiserhof of the Residenz

The huge Christmas tree and an angels’ pyramid eight meters high in front of the Renaissance city hall and the Perlach “tower” create a unique setting. On the Augsburg Christmas Market, over 90 booths sell gifts and food, and it features special activities for kids and live entertainment every day.

The famous Angel Performance: Every Friday to Sunday, the City Hall transforms into a beautiful Advent calendar with 24 girls from Augsburg playing the part of the angels.

The Augsburg “Christkindlesmarkt” can be directly reached within the city with tram lines 2, 3, and 6. Please exit at the stop “Rathausplatz.”
